Entry Level ESOL: Everyday English - Intermediate
This six-week course is for those whose first language is NOT English. It is an intermediate (B1) level course and learners should already be familiar with a basic grasp of the English Language in order to access this course. The sessions will develop learners’ reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Lessons will be delivered in a face-to-face setting using a range of teacher-led and freer interactive activities to develop learners’ proficiency and confidence. In addition to a focus on general pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary, students will be encouraged to reflect on the English they hear around them and bring new vocabulary and expressions into the classroom to share.

Entry Level ESOL: Conversation Club
Would you like to practice your English speaking and listening? Our Gloucester conversation club provides an informal, welcoming space for adult ESOL learners to practice their English, build confidence and develop social connections. Each session will be in a friendly, relaxed safe space and led by an experienced tutor. Learners will be encouraged to use their English and gentle tasks such as using questions will be used to facilitate this. Literature: Gissing and Zola – further studies in 19th century naturalist fiction
This course will look at a range of novels by late 19th century naturalist writers George Gissing and Emile Zola. Zola is seen as the leading exponent of French naturalist fiction and Gissing is often classified as an English naturalist writer. Naturalism is a literary genre that considers human character as being determined by environment, social conditions and evolution. Naturalism is similar to realism in that both genres focus on social commentary, they reject romanticism, but naturalism emphasises scientific objectivism. The novels we will study are Zola’s: The Earth (1887); La Bête Humaine (1890); L’Assommoir (1877) and Gissing’s: The Odd Women (1893); The Nether World (1889); The Whirlpool (1897).
