This Pre-Entry Beginners English ESOL Conversation Class is designed for non-native speakers with little to no English proficiency. Held on Monday mornings in Brighton, East Sussex, this course offers a friendly and supportive environment for those starting their English language journey. Do you want to start learning English? Do you lack confidence when speaking in everyday situations like at the doctor’s, at your child’s school, out shopping or on public transport? If English is not your first language and you want to learn at a beginner level and become more confident to speak to people, this course will get you started with some of the words and phrases needed to communicate in everyday situations. It will also give you confidence with some basic digital communication skills. In addition, we will help you to practise giving your own information and filling in forms accurately.

Reading short texts is an excellent introduction to the works of some of the greatest writers of the western canon. Each week we focus on a short classic novel, reading and discussing key passages. The selected novels are in chronological order, from the 18th century to modern times. We begin with Candide and end with The Ballad of the Sad Café. We’ll be able to share and debate interpretations, sharpen our critical and appreciative faculties, understand what fiction can tell us about the society and culture that produced it, and, hopefully, be inspired to read other works by the writers featured on the course.

Each week focuses on a specific theme, progressively building your understanding. Learn how to handle common situations like applying bandages and slings, treating burns and scalds, performing CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), and most importantly, knowing when to call an ambulance.

It provides the basic skills and knowledge necessary to work in admin, technical, or support roles in a learning environment. Studying support work in schools at level 2 can be a first step towards working with kids in teaching positions. It also provides you with the qualifications needed to work in admin at schools. No matter what role you’re interested in, this course can teach you skills for employability in schools and colleges.

Isolation includes solitude (choosing to be alone for contemplative or other good reasons) and social isolation (real or psychological separation from others, which can result in loneliness). Some artists need solitude to explore the world around them or to remove external pressures. Others use their work to express feelings of loneliness, whether from societal causes, unrequited love, illness, or other circumstances. Our speaker, Roger Wotton, will discuss a range of paintings that express, for example, the solitude found in nature, or the loneliness in urban living. He will consider, too, the most common example of isolation shown in art: the Crucifixion of Christ.
